About USMLE Testing

The first part of the USMLE (Step 1) is usually taken at the end of the second year of med school. It's a one-day, computer-based exam that tests a broad range of topics.

USMLE Step 1 at a Glance

  • 8 hours of testing time, including 1 hour break
  • 7 sections, 1 hour each, 50 questions each
  • Once you finish a section, you may not go back to it

The test emphasizes basic principles in:

  • Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Physiology
  • Pathology
  • Micro Immunology
  • Pharmacology
  • Behavioral Science

USMLE Step 1 Format 

Questions are randomly grouped by subject in each section, meaning you'll see questions from any topic (Anatomy, Behavioral Science, etc.) at any given time. USMLE test takers will read a statement or question followed by 3 to 11 possible responses. They must choose the best response.
